Alexandra Moreira
Alexandra Moreira holds a D. Phil. in Molecular Biology, University of Oxford, UK and a degree in Biochemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. A. Moreira currently holds a Principal Investigator position at the University of Porto and she is the Gene Expression group leader at the IBMC, Porto. Together with her research activities, she is a member of the Scientific Board of the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD Program, University Porto, she is the responsible for the course “Regulation of Gene Expression” in the GABBA PhD Program and she lectures at several MSc courses and PhD Programs.
Currently she is an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Aveiro. A. Moreira has served as a member of the Executive Committee and as Coordinator of the Division of Infection and Immunity at the IBMC. She serves as evaluator of international and national Research Grants, as a referee for scientific journals and acted as external examiner in more than 20 PhD theses in Biomedical Sciences: Univ Oxford UK; Univ Porto; Univ Lisbon; Open Univ UK. She has started and organized four National Meetings on RNA BIOLOGY (~100 participants and international speakers).
The objective of her research group at the IBMC is to understand in depth the molecular mechanisms involved in the integration between RNAPII transcription and alternative pre-mRNA processing, with a focus on those events that are physiologically relevant in Eukaryotes. In the laboratory we use state-of-the art molecular biology methodologies and two well established model systems: Drosophila and human cells.
